The Town of Gate City Police Department is seeking applicants for the position of full-time certified Virginia Police Officer.

Duties consist of providing a full range of law enforcement services for the Town of Gate City, enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and ordinances of the Town of Gate City. The officer will apply community-oriented policing principles daily, working to identify problems and develop strategies in partnership with citizens and other agencies.

Applicants must successfully complete a rigorous background investigation including but not limited to: physical examination, pre-employment drug testing, and social history investigation.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Performing general patrol and crime prevention, detecting crime, identifying and apprehending offenders, and participating in subsequent court proceedings. Reducing opportunities for crime through preventative patrol. Aiding people in danger of physical harm. Facilitating vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Performing security checks of private and commercial buildings. Conducting thorough investigations, collecting evidence, and preparing detailed reports on all crimes, vehicle accidents, arrests, and incidents. Serving warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other official papers. Coordinating with other law enforcement agencies in the apprehension and detention of wanted persons. Rendering first aid when qualified. Preserving the peace at public gatherings and resolving disputes. Reporting street hazards, signal outages, and conditions endangering public safety. Maintaining weapons, equipment, and vehicles in functional condition. Accomplishing other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of police investigative techniques, rules of evidence, laws of search and seizure, and interrogation. Knowledge of counseling, mediation, and community organizing principles. Knowledge of adolescent psychology fundamentals. Ability to analyze evidence, conduct skilled interviews, and prepare clear and concise oral and written reports. Skill in the use of firearms and police equipment. Ability to establish effective working relationships with juveniles, parents, school officials, fellow workers, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications: Current DCJS law enforcement certification (or ability to obtain within one year of hire), high school diploma or GED (college preferred), unblemished record and character, U.S. citizen, valid Virginia Operator’s License, demonstrated responsible work experience, committed to the highest level of professionalism and excellence. Must be physically fit and of good moral character. Trainee or Auxiliary officer will be considered for the right person.

Physical Demands: Work requires exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly. Must have physical stamina and the ability to run, swim, hike, and climb proficiently. Work involves climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting. Visual acuity required for analyzing data, operating vehicles, and observing surroundings. Work is subject to inside and outside conditions, extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, and hazards. Some work is performed under emergency conditions involving considerable personal hazard.
